What I aim to do is is to inform parents and the community of the varied and exciting activities in our library. So my first entry is a summary of term 3.

I hope you enjoy reading about what your children are learning in our Library/ICT programme.

Term 3 in our library was very busy!

We began by reading, discussing and reviewing the Children's Book Council short listed books in preparation for Bookweek. The children enjoyed talking about the books and there was lively discussion about the pro's and cons of each book we read.

The winners were announced in Bookweek and these titles are available for children to borrow.

Books of the year are:

Younger readers: Dragon Moon, by Carole Wilkinson

Early childhood: Pearle Barley and Charlie Parsley, by Aaron Blabey

Information book: Parsley Rabbits Book about Books, by Francis Watts

Bookweek was in week 5, with the highlight being our second Bookfair of the year which raised over $1000 worth of books for our libray! A huge thank you to the Kinross Community who continue to support our fairs and our school library.

We also continued with our incursions with the African dance and percussion group WALA! visiting in week 4. This was a fantastic opportunity for students to experience culture and music from other parts of the world. The performance was full of energy and had everyone up and dancing to the music. Look out for our final incursion for 2008 - Andy Wright who is a storyteller with a difference.

Of course our inquiry lessons were based around the Olympics. Our year 1 students created their own Olympic rings and Olympic medals using Tux Paint. Tux is a free programme which is easily downloaded from the Internet. Just Google search Tux and follow the links.

Our year 4 and 5 students researched Olympic Athletes and their sports and presented their information using either Word or Powerpoint. Year 5 students also used Notebook software and Comic Life to create a pictorial impression of the Olympics.

Another great freebie this term is Wordle which creates word clouds that have a variety of uses. Again just Google Wordle in the search box and follow the links to use. Students have been using this programme in lots of different creative ways towards the end of the term.

Finally, I hope you all have a restful holiday and recover from the flu's and bugs that seem to have plagued us this term!

Mrs Dearle

Teacher librarian
